What Is Mold?

Mold is a living organism that is part of our natural environment. Outdoors, mold plays a beneficial role by breaking down dead organic material and recycling it into the environment. Molds come in many colors – green, white and black molds being the most common. Molds reproduce via tiny spores, and these mold spores float through the air continually, whether indoors or outdoors.

When mold spores land on a damp spot, they grow and digest it. There are molds that can grow on foods, carpet, paper, wood, and leather, as well as many other natural fabrics.

Inspecting Your Home for Mold

Routinely inspect your home for signs of mold, moisture, leaks or spills. This will solve the problem of mold before the health of your family is affected. You should:

Check for moldy odors.
Look for water stains or discoloration throughout your home.
Check bathrooms and under sinks for standing water, stains or mold.
Do not let water stand in air conditioning or refrigerator drip pans.

Controlling Household Mold

The only effective way to control household mold is to clean up any mold you find and eliminate the moisture sources. If you clean up the mold but do not fix the water problem, then the mold problem will come back. You must:

Scrub mold off from hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely. Absorbent materials (such as ceiling tiles, carpet, clothing, and leather) should be replaced if they have mold growing on them.
Fix the sources of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
Clean and dry any damp or wet materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
Routinely check your air conditioner, refrigerator, and dehumidifier. Keep them clean and dry, and replace their drip pans.
Maintain low indoor humidity.
Keep kitchens and bathrooms well ventilated when showering, cooking, or using the dishwasher.
Always vent clothes dryers to the outside.
Prevent condensation by adding insulation.
Do not install carpeting in areas where there is a continual moisture problem.
Do not paint or caulk moldy surfaces. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
