Oprah's Angel in West Palm Beach |
| TV talk queen Oprah Winfrey gave $1,000 to each of her 310 audience members last week and told them: Go out and use it to make someone else's life better. And she gave them video cameras to capture the giving. WPB's Kerman Haynes, who was in Oprah's Chicago studio Oct. 30, has taken it one step further. In record time, Haynes, 29, sales director for the fancy new downtown WPB condo building The Strand, has turned his grand into an estimated $45,000 worth of goodies, time and services for two young children with serious allergies and asthma. The boys, 2 and 4, are the children of poor single mothers, and both attend the Florence Fuller day-care center in Boca. "The boys' illnesses really put a strain on their mothers' lives," Haynes said. "For each day they're home sick, the moms can't work and sink further in poverty." Upon his return, Haynes and a friend worked the phones, threw Oprah's name around and secured air purifying systems at the school and in the boys' homes, a $1,000 fund for emergency medical care, a year's worth of cleaning supplies and services for the school and the children's homes, and the services of a local pediatrician who'll take care of visits and medications for one year for the nominal sum of $5. "I tried for years to get on Oprah," said Haynes, who tapes her while he is at work so he can watch it later. "I like that she is using her star appeal for positive things. Instead of just giving stuff away, like a car, I think she wanted the audience to feel the gratification that comes from helping someone out." Haynes, and the other 309, are scheduled to return to the show within the next few weeks. |
